PLEASE SCROLL DOWN FOR FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. Do you offer gift certificates?

A:  Yes.  You are always able to purchase gift certificates for sailing lessons and/or private cruises throughout the year.  They make great Christmas and birthday presents.  There is no need to determine cruise/lesson date(s) at the time of  the purchase.  Instead, the recipient(s) of your gift can contact us at their convenience to schedule the cruise/lesson.

Q. How may students will there be on the boat?

A:  We believe that a small student to instructor ratio is essential.  Because of this, we will never have more than three students on-board during a lesson.  By limiting the number of students on the boat, each student will be constantly engaged.

Q. What is the sailing season in Buffalo?

A:  Weather permitting, we will sail from the second week in May through the middle of October.

——————————————————————————————————–

Q. Are classes/cruises cancelled due to rain?

A:  We do not cancel due to rain alone, however we want everyone to enjoy themselves.  Classes/Cruises are cancelled at the discretion of the Captain in the event of lightning, unsafe winds or other conditions.  Feel free to contact Patriot Sailing if you are in doubt about the conditions.

 ——————————————————————————————————–

Q. What happens if a lesson or cruise is cancelled due to weather, or other reason by Patriot Sailing?

A:  In the event we cancel an “introduction to sailing” lesson, or a “private cruise”, we will make all efforts to re-book you at another time of your convenience.  In the event that you decide you are unable to re-schedule, we will provide you with a full refund.  In the event that one of the “learn to sail” lessons is cancelled, we will extend your training at a future time of your convenience.

——————————————————————————————————–

Q. Are the private cruises really private, or will other guests be booked on our sail?

A:  Unlike some other sailing cruises offered in Buffalo, Patriot Sailing will NOT schedule other individuals on your cruise.  The only way there will be more than you and your guest on a “Cruise for Two” is if YOU invite them.  Please see the “Cruises” page for more details.

——————————————————————————————————–

Q. Where and when should I arrive for a class/cruise?

A: Please plan on being at the marina 15 minutes before the scheduled class/cruise.  This will allow time to find parking, use the restroom facilities and listen to a short safety briefing, so we do not cut into your sailing time.  Patriot Sailing will provide you with detailed instructions about where to go at the time you reserve your lessons/ cruise.

Q. What should I wear/bring?

A: Dress according to the weather, but keep in mind that it is often cooler on the lake.  When in doubt, pack additional clothing (which can be stored in the cabin).  Sneakers/boats-shoes with non-marking soles are best.  For those of you taking lessons, you will be moving around on a deck that can, at times, be slippery.  A hat, sunglasses and sun-tan lotion are also suggested.

——————————————————————————————————–

Q. Can I bring food/beverages/alcohol?

A: For students, no liquor is allowed and we request that you not plan on eating lunch etc. during your lessons.  Other than that, some type beverage for hydration is fine.  For cruise charter guests, it is permissible to bring food and beverages on-board.  While this in not a “booze cruise”, you are welcome to bring a bottle of wine, or a few bottles of beer, etc., to enjoy as we sail around Buffalo.  (Note: Unfortunately, red wine is not permitted as it stains fiberglass).

——————————————————————————————————–

Q. Can we smoke on the boat?

A: Smoking is NOT permitted on the boat at any times.

——————————————————————————————————–

Q. Will I be required to wear a “life jacket” / “personal flotation device (PFD)” ?

A: Because students are required to move around the boat in varying conditions, they are required to wear a PFD during lessons (you can bring your own if you want, but we will provide them otherwise).  Cruise guests are not required to wear PFDs (unless they can not swim, or if the captain determines that weather, or other conditions warrant their use).  Young children will be required to wear a PFD in accordance with NYS law.

——————————————————————————————————–

Q: Are you regulated by the United States Coast Guard and do you have all required equipment on board?

A: Yes to both questions.  Both sailing lessons and private cruises are subject to USCG rules and regulations because you are paying a fee for your time on the boat.  The USCG requires your “Captain” to be licensed by the USCG and also regulates safety gear that must be on board the boat (i.e. PFDs, distress flares, fire extinguishers, etc.).

——————————————————————————————————–

Q. Is there a bathroom on the boat?

A: The short answer to that is yes.  However using the “head”  (as a bathroom is referred to on a boat) on a small sailboat is not very private or comfortable.  Restrooms are available at the restaurant/marina facility building located just south of the Courtesy Dock.  It is highly recommended that you utilize these facilities before coming over to the boat.

——————————————————————————————————–

Q. Can I bring a camera on-board?

A: Absolutely!  However, keep in mind you will be on a moving boat subject to wind and waves, so keep a good grip on it.  When not in use, you can store your camera (and other personal items) in an enclosed cabin to protect them from the elements, or from falling into Lake Erie.

——————————————————————————————————–

Q. Can I help with the sailing?

A:  As a student you will be doing most of the sailing.  As a cruising guest the Captain will be glad to let you help sail the boat (weather conditions permitting).  However, if you prefer, you can just sit back and enjoy the sail.

——————————————————————————————————–

Q. As a student will I need to study?

A:  The short answer is yes.  If you really want to learn to sail, you need to immerse yourself in that endeavor.  While studying is not intended to be (and will not be) a burden, you will find it very beneficial to review the material we will provide you prior to each class.  This review will help you to better understand what we will be working on during each class.  Of surprise to many new sailors is the amount of new terminology you need to learn (so that you can communicate with your own crew in the future).  While it may seem daunting at first, we promise to break it down into manageable slices.
